Tigers Begin Spring League on a Hot Streak

Posted by sharris2929 on May 1, 2012

The Tigers are participating in the South Holland, IL Spring League this year, using a squad made up of mostly Tiger regulars, with a few others tossed in.  The Tigers have started out this season on an absolute tear, going 4-0 in the first three weeks of the season.  Here is a recap of the first four games:

April 15th:  Tigers 17 Red Sox 8

The Tigers bats got going early an often in this one, burying the Red Sox easily in a laugher.  The pitching was extremely solid as well, with Tiger regulars Scott Harris, Mike Alleva, and Anthony Perez combining to give up only 1 earned run in 6 innings.

April 15th:  Tigers 12 Dogs 6

The bats were out again as the Tigers beat down the Dogs in their second game that day.  Gordon Sharkey, normally of the Outlaws but playing with the Tigers this spring, pitched 4 dominant innings and bombed a 3 run homer through howling winds.

April 22nd:  Tigers 6 White Sox 4

The offense got it going early, but slacked late.  Luckily, another solid outing for the Tigers pitching staff ensured a win.  Mike Alleva went a solid two innings, only surrendering a lone hit while striking out 4.  Scott Harris and Dave Purkey also tossed scoreless frames in the win.

April 29th:  Tigers 7 Red Sox 6

This one was an instant classic.  Dave Purkey started on the mound and was fantastic, only the defense let him down and allowed the Red Sox to move out to an early 5-1 lead.  But this is the Tigers we are talking about here, and no lead is safe.  They scratched out two runs to make it 5-3, only to have the Red Sox add another one to make it 6-3.  Scott Harris had since replaced Purkey on the mound, and held the Sox in check, allowing the Tigers to tie it up in the bottom of the 7th.  Harris threw his second consecutive 5 pitch inning to hold the Red Sox scoreless in the top of the 8th.  In the bottom, Dave Purkey lead off with a walk.  Juan Sanchez came up one out later and promptly ended the game with his 4th hit and second triple of the game.

It’s tough to get excited about results in spring training, but a 4-0 start will certainly have the notice of the other teams in the league.
