Cubs(4) Vs. Tigers(2)

 Over the Hill League Playoffs

Thursday, October 6th,

7 pm

The Tigers started the postseason with a stunning and disappointing loss to the Red Sox.  Since then the Tigers have put together two of their best performances of the season, winning two games and outscoring their opponents 27-7.  During the regular season, the Tigers put together a streak of performances like this en route to a 9 game winning streak and a dramatic ascension to first place.  If this run continues, it’ll end with the Tigers at the top of the mountain winning the tournament.

That journey continues tonight as the Tigers take on the Cubs at 7 pm.

The Cubs punched their ticket to move on in the tourney with a win over the Red Sox on Sunday, knocking the Red Sox out of the tourney.  The game had plenty of drama.  The Cubs led by 4 in the 7th, but the Sox stormed all the way back to tie it up.  The game stayed deadlocked until the 9th, when the Cubs won on a walk off bases loaded walk.  It probably wasn’t the way they drew it up, but they’ll take it.

Following that game, the Tigers took the field at the Sportsplex and put an epic beating on the White Sox, winning 16-6 behind a tremendously balanced offensive performance, and a dominant mount trip by Dave Purkey.

Both teams are aware of what’s at stake in this contest, as the winner will move on to play the Brewers on Sunday night.  The Brew Crew found themselves in the losers’ bracket following a 4-2 loss to the Outlaws on Tuesday night.  The Outlaws now sit alone in the winners’ bracket, awaiting the winner of the game on Sunday that both the Tigers and Cubs hope to be a part of.

These two teams met twice during the regular season, with the Tigers coming away on top in each contest.  The Tigers won an early season meeting on June 26th 9-7.  Then on August 19th, the Tigers outclassed the Cubs 8-3 for their 9th straight win.

None of those games matter now.  Any advantage either team might have on paper is meaningless, as the Tigers found out early on in the playoffs  What matters is when the dust settles tonight on the Sportsplex, which team has put the most runs on the scoreboard.

Come on down to the Sportsplex tonight to see if the Tigers can continue their dramatic playoff run and do just that.

Tigers 16 White Sox 6

Posted by sharris2929 on October 3, 2011

Last week, the Tigers gave a reminder of how dominant this team can be when they are firing on all cylinders.  Last night, they proved that it wasn’t a fluke, and that this team means business in the playoffs.  Great pitching plus great hitting plus great defense equals great results, and the Tigers truly put together a dominant performance in all phases of the game to end the White Sox season, winning 16-6.

Dave Purkey picked up his second straight playoff win on the mound, going 4 dominant innings.  He gave up 2 early runs in the first, and the White Sox were threatening for more, loading the bases with 0 outs.  But Purkey toughened up and struck out the side to end the inning.

The Tigers put up one in the first and two in the second, giving Purk a 3-2 lead.  In innings 2 through 4 he was untouchable, giving up just one hit and striking out 5 more.  In his four innings of work, Purkey finished with only 2 hits allowed and 8 strikeouts.

When Purkeys’ night of work was done, the offense decided to take the pressure off him, and the offense sprung to life.  The Tigers put up 8 runs in the 4th, giving them an 11-2 lead that would carry them through to victory.  The offense didn’t rest though, adding 5 more runs to cruise.

The offense was all over the White Sox pitching, getting good pitches to hit early in the count and making the Sox pay.  Purkey was the offensive star of the game as well, going 3-3 with two RBI.  Dave Hayse, Joe Anaya, and Scott Harris also had multiple RBI games.  Big contributions were also made by Mike “Mufftober” Kunert, esteemed coach Jeff Nelson, Tim Mullally, Mike Alleva, and Curt Lechner.

The Positives

  • Purkey had it in control on the mound and at the plate.  Great to see Dave put together two dominant efforts in a row.  When Dave pitches like this, the other team doesn’t have much hope.
  • A terrific defensive performance by the Tigers.  With a few Tigers unable to play, there were guys out of their normal positions.  Harris worked all 7 innings behind the dish and even threw a runner out stealing at second.  Dan Titus played short and made all the plays.  Jeff Nelson filled in at first base early in the game and had no problems.
  • As stated above, the offense was stellar once again.  When a game summary includes 9 separate players who made key contributions, you know something special went down.
  • A big hurrah to the Tigers for not letting up, and showing a great killer instinct.  There have been many times when the Tigers built a lead but got complacent and let that lead fall away.  Not last night.  The Tigers never let their foot off the gas, and broke the will of the White Sox.

The Negatives

  • It was really cold out.

What’s Next

The Tigers advance to take on the Cubs on Thursday at 7 pm.  The Cubs advanced with a victory over the Red Sox in dramatic fashion, winning in 9 innings on a bases loaded walk.
